Zhong Dong

LIVING Kidney DONOR NEEDED

I pray that one day, I can find a potential match for a living donor so I can continue my pursuits and live my life for many more years to come

My name is Zhong (Albert) Dong. In early 2000, I was diagnosed with hypertension, inherited from my mother. At the same time, the function of my kidneys was slightly impaired. Upon my nephrologist’s advice, I began to take antihypertension medications and changed my lifestyle. I exercise regularly and pay attention to my diet. I do not drink or smoke. Despite all my efforts, my kidney function continues to decline. Last year, my lab tests showed only about 20% of normal renal function, indicating a stage 4 chronic kidney disease.

I graduated from a medical school in China 40 years ago, came to the United States to pursue my dream of conducting medical research over 30 years ago, and earned my PhD in pathology at Wayne State University School of Medicine. Before my retirement, I worked for the Perinatology Research Branch of the National Institute of Diabetes and Kidney Diseases for over a decade. The branch was housed jointly by Wayne State University School of Medicine and the Detroit Medical Center, and I oversaw the core laboratory at the branch.

Although I do not have to work anymore because I retired a few years ago, my daily life is exciting. I started to play violin when I was in middle school and have been doing it since then. I used to play in a community symphony orchestra, as I love classical music, and I played in a church band. Now, I play solo and accompaniment pieces in my church whenever needed. A couple of years ago, I decided to learn piano and music theory and began to take piano lessons every week and practice at home every day. I’ve joined my church's handbell ensemble and choir and attend weekly rehearsals and Sunday services. I also go to the gym three times a week to work out and maintain my muscles and bones. Additionally, I take a brisk walk at a nearby park on other days for cardio exercises. Unfortunately, the progression of my chronic kidney disease gradually clouds my retirement life and significantly slows down my physical activities.

Last month, I went through the pre-kidney transplant consultation and had blood work done for lab tests. I expect to be placed on a waitlist for a kidney transplant. I came to this country more than 30 years ago and have few relatives in this country. Both my wife and our only son have health issues; therefore, I never thought about finding a living donor. However, my care consultation team has encouraged me to share my story with other people to search for a possible living kidney donor. With tremendous gratitude, I’m writing my experience with chronic kidney disease, and I pray that one day, I can find a potential match for a living donor so I can continue my pursuits and live my life for many more years to come.
