I have known David for twelve years. We eventually became best friends; now we are partners in each another’s lives.
What immediately struck me about David was that he was smart and funny. That is what turned what should have been a casual, brief interaction into a very long conversation that led to a relationship that will last through the rest of our lives. Over the years, I have learned what a kind, honest, and wise person he is. Ours is a relationship based on mutual admiration and respect. Simply put, David is a good man.
We have known about David’s kidney disease for at least eight years now. I was hoping he would outlive it; so was he. As soon as he learned transplant could be in his future, I immediately offered to be a donor, should it come to that.
His situation progressed slowly over the next few years. Gradually, I noticed him tiring much sooner than usual, needing to rest more often and generally not doing the things he used to do .
He has been very independent doing his own home improvement projects and repairs. He also maintains an active presence in the life of his 94 year old mother. He helps others live fuller lives by using his skills as a chiropractor. Now after doing these things, he barely has any energy left for himself.
I suspect dialysis will be on the horizon before long. Unfortunately, since David’s diagnosis, I needed to be treated for breast cancer. Now, I cannot be considered as a donor until I’m at least three or four years out from completion of treatment. I only completed treatment ten months ago.
I know that dialysis will keep him alive; I just want more than that for him. I so wish I could help, but I can’t. Would you?
UPDATE: Hello all. Just checking in. David hadn’t found a donor yet. I’m still so angry - if only I didn’t get cancer till after he needed the kidney….I just have to stop thinking about that.
I see him getting more easily fatigued and nodding off. I can see dialysis in the near future and am so hoping it won’t have to come to that or at least that it won’t be that way for long.
