Betsy Davis Needs A LIVING Kidney DONOR

Betsy is my wife, she has polycystic kidney disease (PKD) and she needs a kidney transplant. I am writing this in the hope that we can reach a lot of people and find her a match. Betsy enjoys everyday life whether it's going to work, working outside in the yard, or decorating our house for the next holiday. She puts her touch on everything. She is the best wife anyone could hope for.

PKD is starting to take its toll on Betsy making her tire easily. Betsy was very active, but I've noticed she's had to slow down and she gets discouraged because she was able to be so active in the past and that makes me sad. We enjoy traveling, camping, or just simply going for a ride in the country. We enjoy spending time with our kids and grandkids.

I want her to get a transplant so she can get back to being active and not have this cloud over her head. I would give her one of my kidneys in a heartbeat (which I tried), but am unable to be a donor. I am asking you to please consider being a living donor and see if you're a match. Most people don't know that you have 2 kidneys but only need one kidney to live a long, healthy life. There is no cost to you as a donor. There are currently 120,000 people waiting for a lifesaving organ transplant in the U.S. Of these, 100,000 await kidney transplants.

The median wait time for a kidney transplant is 3-5 years and can vary depending on health, compatibility, and where you live.

In 2014, 17,107 kidney transplants took place in the U.S. Of these, 11,570 came from deceased donors and 5,537 came from living donors.

Every 14 minutes someone is added to the kidney transplant waitlist.

A kidney from a living donor lasts longer and begins functioning more quickly than a kidney from a deceased donor.

In 1995, kidney donation became minimally invasive with a procedure called laparoscopic nephrectomy, which only requires four small incisions. Hospital stay is typically only 3 days after this operation.

Last year, over 700 living donor kidney transplants occurred using Kidney Paired Donation.
